In Iceland, flying pace is regarded as the most precious gait - which everybody who has ever felt it will agree on. Good pacers are racehorses: highly strung, vibrating with energy, eagerly awaiting the start. A pacer is more than just a horse - he is a friend, reliable and willing to give his all. He is a star - with his own personality and quirks
Flying pace is a two-beat gait, the lateral pairs of legs move together and there is a moment of suspension
It is only ridden at racing speed and only over short stretches of several hundred meters. The horse shows an enormous amount of power and a good pacer nearly seems to fly.
While every Icelandic Horse should be able to tolt, not all have the genetic ability to pace. Pace is usually only ridden at racing speed, slow pace (called "piggy pace") is regarded as a fault
